[LogBook] Diving in the Atlantic – Azores

Ahoy Sailors & Mermaids! Are you ready to get lost in the middle of the Atlantic? After a long silence (I have been meeting a lot of whales, family reunion! haha), I will take you underwater to discover beautiful Portugese islands, in the middle of the ocean: The Azores!
If you have never heard about them, don’t worry, most people don’t know about their existence. Cold waters, volcanic landscapes, absence of beaches, and of touristic activities are keeping the Azores away from the spotlights, and it’s for the best! Although, these islands are well known by the sailors, the main activities here are hiking, whale watching, and diving! Best holidays ever!!

Are you ready? Let’s Dive!

#Ilhé Negro, Faial island, Atlantic Ocean

Temperature (at 20 meters): 18°
Sightings:
Black Moray, Guinean Pufferfish, Atlantic Damselfish, Lobster, male (Grey) and female (Red) Parrotfish, Wide-Eyed Flounder, Madeira Rockfish, Island Grouper, juvenile Ornate Wrasse, Gray Triggerfish, 2 Eagle Rays, Spiny Starfish…
Notes:
Nice diving spot around Faial island! Water is fresh but you can easily stay 45min underwater with the appropriate gear (I had my own 7mm wetsuit, my rashguard, and 1piece swimming suit, and trust me it keeps you warm!).  I was super happy to see my first Eagle Rays and to observe a species of Moray I have never seen before.

#Pocinho, Pico island, Atlantic Ocean

Temperature (at 20 meters): 18°
Sightings:
Blacktail Comber, Black Moray, Fire Worm, Violet/Pink/White Sea Urchin, Red Starfish, Madeira Rockfish, Dusky Grouper, Fan Mussel…
Notes:
This diving spot is really beautiful and gives an amazing feeling of freedom! I wish there was more fishes to see, but I guess they all went to hide after the 3 stormy days we had around the Azores! There were a lot of Sea Urchins although and found the cutest one (that i put as cover of this post) wearing algae and a seashell as a hat!
I absolutely recommend you the diving center Pico Sport, to dive around Pico island! A spacious shop (also selling WW tours and souvenirs, I love it!), amazing staff, location (around the harbour’s corner), and facilities! Thanks to A. Billy, Seb and the Frenchie!

#Boca das Caldeirinhas, Faial, Atlantic Ocean

Temperature (at 20 meters): 17°
Sightings:
2 Eagle Rays, Black Moray, Conger Eel, Dusky Grouper, Blacktail Comber, male and female Parrotfish, Ornate Wrasse, Madeira Rockfish, Atlantic Damselfish, Blue Damselfish, Sargo…
Notes:
An interesting and colourful dive, with a lot of Starfish, Black Starfish, and fishes, including a huge resident Dusky Grouper! If I remember right, this spot is actually an underwater crater, how cool is that? It was quite wavy at the surface and it was difficult to swim under the surface sometimes, luckily for me I managed not to feel seasick and really enjoyed this diving spot!

This is the end of this logbook in the Azores! If you liked it please feel free to let me know in a comment! Sea you soon for more bubbles! Diving Atlantic Azores Diving Atlantic Azores Diving Atlantic Azores
